Kumudini was the name of the mother of Rai Bahadur Ranada Prasad Shaha, lost her life from tetanus infection with out any medical attention which was the common fate for most of the poor people in contemporary rural Bengal. At that time he was only 7 years old. The memory of his mother's death haunted him throughout his life.

Kumudini is a Bengali name. The meaning of this word is 'Sacred Lotus'. Our logo bears this name that cares for the Education, Health and Environment which was the dream of our founder.

The Management of Kumudini Welfare Trust (KWT) rests on the Board of Directors and the Chief Executive of the Trust is the Managing Director. Rai Bahadur R.P. Shaha was the first Managing Director of the Trust. Since his disappearance his daughter Mrs. Joya Pati took over the responsibilities of Chairman & Managing Director.

From January, 2000 Mr. Rajiv Prasad Shaha (grandson of R.P. Shaha) has been appointed as the Chairman & Managing Director of Kumudini Welfare Trust of Bengal (BD) Ltd. The Trust charter (the Trust is registered under the Companies Act of 1913) clearly stipulates that the principal aim of the Trust businesses would be to bear the cost of Hospital and Homes in Mirzapur and other such public welfare programs in the country. The Trust shall not 0be used for personal profit or gains. Each Director's power and authority are limited and regulated by Trust policies and guidelines on public welfare and humanitarian activities.

In Narayanganj alone Kumudini has more than 1,500 employees. An average of 5,000 seasonal workers work here. The Trust has 82 acres of land in Narayanganj and nearby Sitalakhya river.

Each of the Trust's business has separate corporate identity and at the same time they are subject to the Trust's control. Management of each of the business endeavors to earn as much profit as possible so that more can be spent on the Trust's public welfare and humanitarian activities. As a result, all of the businesses run by Kumudini are highly competitive as well as profitable.

The Mirzapur complex is spread over about a hundred acres of land. The Hospital, Bharateswari Homes, Medical College, Nursing School and other programs have separate administrators. The Hospital Superintendent, Principals of Medical College, Nursing School and the Homes all run their respective institutions separately and independently. The total number of employees at Kumudini Complex is 850

The most distinctive aspect of Kumudini Hospital is its workers' relentless drive, self-sacrifice and desire to serve mankind. The other distinctive aspect is its management which continuously seeks to fulfil the Founder's dream of a self- sufficient Kumudini. This is clearly reflected in all of the management's efforts from the starting of a bakery to the setting-up of Kumudini's own power station
