HANDICRAFT

Kumudini Handicrafts Centre was established in 1980 with the objective of supporting the fine art and traditional cottage industries of Bangladesh. Kumudini Handicrafts embarked on development of high quality handicrafts for local market as well as export to the international market.

With the establishment of this project Kumudini is playing special role in mobilizing the potential and creative capacity of a large number of women and contributing towards the goal of greater participation of women in development. The large numbers of women who are the beneficiaries of the project are not directly organized by Kumudini Handicrafts. Their interactions with Kumudini Handicrafts are as follows.

Kumudini arranges for training of group members. Kumudini has residential accommodation with a very nominal cost for women, participating in such training program.

Mission

· Kumudini Handicrafts promote & develops the traditional crafts of Bangladesh.

· Kumudini has created an opportunity for unemployed/ under privileged women to earn income by working in their home. Groups of women willing to work are formed on the basis of experience and skill. Such groups from all over Bangladesh get in touch with Kumudini through group leaders.

· Kumudini arranges for training of group members. Kumudini has residential accommodation with a very nominal cost for women, participating in such training program.

· Women empowerment by offering the scope of economic participation of the rural women to improve their status in the society and give them opportunity to become active member in their family, where they can be involved in policy making.

· To give proper training to the artisans so that their work may be of high quality and compete in the market both locally and internationally.

· To achieve the rich heritage to Bangladesh in the field of handicraft, without tempering basic skills & tradition.

· To deliver direct payment to the artisans at their home after they finish their work.

· As a part of its mandate to support indigenous crafts, Kumudini promotes the extensive use of vegetable dyes extracted from leaves, petals, bark, roots etc.

· Throughout the country Kumudini has a network of artisans , the beneficiaries of this jobs are 25,000 at present, which shall be increased to 30000 at the end of 2005.
